5 Ways To Gain Control

1. Use a leash

A leash is the best way to control your dog’s movements. Instead of your dog running around the house with a sock in their mouth, have a leash on your dog to prevent frustration. This won’t be forever but, in the meantime, while you teach boundaries.

2. Teach place

Instead of your dog chewing furniture or barking, teach your dog to stay on place. This can be a dog bed or a place cot. Use a leash to guide your dog on and start small. Hold them accountable while you watch tv and then slowly increase the distraction, duration and the distance you walk away from them. This teaches calm state of mind, leadership, and control.

3. Enforce threshold boundaries

Before heading out the door, make your dog wait at the door and exit with permission. If your dog waits and then busts out the door when released, they may not have understood. Go back inside and practice until your dog exits in a calm manner.

4. Crate

Always crate your dog at night and when you are gone. In order to have control over the environment, you must be present. When you are not present, the crate is the way to maintain control. Set your dog up for success!

5. Use food

Our dogs eat every day. Why not use it for training? Use your dogs’ meals to teach new behaviors. You can even have fun with your dog and teach them new tricks. Even though you don’t need to make your dog work for every meal, it can be a great way to teach your dog to see you as a leader and provider.
